How to keep your jewellery sparkling

When your jewellery arrives with you (in our very lovely packaging), it will be a real sparkler. The finishing process here at Jeweller’s Loupe is second-to-none and your jewellery will be highly polished so that it glistens in every light. But how do you keep your jewellery sparkling?

Our finishing process

After your jewellery is cast into your chosen precious metal, the raw casting lands on our jeweller’s workbench. This is your jewellery in its basic form and the metal is dull and rough. But it doesn’t stay that way for long.

Finishing is the process of specially filing the raw casting to make it perfectly smooth and buffed. We start by using emery boards of varying roughness, working from the most coarse to the finest. Then, our jewellers use a polishing machine to bring out the natural shine of the metal. Finally, your jewellery is dipped into an ultrasonic machine (which uses tiny sonic waves to clean the ring) and then it is steamed for the ultimate particle-blitz. The only place it goes from here is straight into your ring box; safe, sound and sparkling!

Keeping your jewellery clean

It’s only natural that over time your jewellery will become a little dirty. When it comes to rings, the biggest culprits of this are hand cream and soap. They can get blocked up behind the diamonds/gemstones, particularly if you have an open setting on your ring.

Don’t panic! It just means that general-life-gunk is blocking access for light to enter your diamond/gemstone, and it’s easily solvable. All you need to do is give it a simple wash. You can do this using warm water with a little bit of washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Gently clean around the setting and stones and in any nooks and crannies on the band. (Circular motions are often pretty useful.) And before you know it, your jewellery should then get its sparkle back.

Avoid bumps and knocks

All of our jewellery is carefully, precision-made by expert Yorkshire craftsmen. Any and all of the diamonds/gemstones within your jewellery will be hand set to ensure that they are totally secure.

It is also true that diamonds are one of the hardest substances on this lovely earth. Nonetheless, if you give your jewellery a right old battering, it will get damaged. The odd bump and knock should be absolutely fine in regards to any diamonds/gemstones, but we would advise you to avoid being too heavy-handed as this will certainly mark the polished precious metal on your jewellery. Coloured gemstones vary in their resilience too.

In general, we would advise you to just be sensible. Remember we are talking about your special, fine jewellery after all.

Jewellery insurance

It is possible to lose or damage your jewellery. So, we do advise you to take up some form of insurance, even if it's only for your own piece of mine.

We have written a specific article all on Jewellery Insurance, which is worth the read if you would like to know more.
